What's the difference between reputation management and PR?

Reputation management scope
Reputation management focuses on monitoring and controlling what's searchable about you online. It's reactive and defensive—addressing what's already out there, responding to reviews, removing or suppressing negative content, and building positive search visibility.
PR scope
Public relations manages your overall image through strategic communication with media, stakeholders, and the public. It's broader and more proactive—pitching stories, building relationships with journalists, issuing statements, and controlling narrative.
Real difference
Reputation management is what shows up when someone searches your name. PR is how you reach people before they search. A PR person might get you quoted in articles (reputation management benefit); a reputation manager monitors when those articles appear and ensures they rank well.
When you need which
Small businesses and individuals usually need reputation management more than PR. PR becomes important when you're trying to proactively shape major narratives or reach large audiences. During crises, you often need both—PR to communicate publicly, reputation management to handle the digital fallout.
Can overlap
PR agencies sometimes offer reputation services; reputation managers sometimes do media outreach. They're complementary—good PR creates positive content that reputation management then helps rank.
